The honest answer is: more often than most people do, and less often than a salesperson will tell you. Here's how to land on the right number for your house.
The baseline: every 12 to 18 months
For a household with no pets, no smokers and normal foot traffic, once a year is the right rhythm. That's also what most carpet manufacturers require in writing to keep the warranty valid — a detail almost nobody reads until they need it.
Pets, kids or allergies: every 6 to 12 months
Dander, accidents and food traffic change the math. Dust mites feed on skin cells and dander that settle into the pile, and their debris is one of the most common indoor allergy triggers. If someone in the house wakes up congested, the carpet is worth looking at before the mattress or the ductwork.
Rentals and high-traffic homes: every 6 months
Hallways, stairs and entryways take a disproportionate beating. Cleaning just those lanes twice a year and the whole floor annually is usually cheaper than replacing carpet three years early.
Why waiting costs more than cleaning
Soil in carpet isn't soft. It's sand, grit and mineral particles, and every footstep grinds them against the fiber like sandpaper. Once the fiber is abraded, the carpet looks dull permanently — no cleaning brings that back. Vacuuming twice a week and extracting on schedule is what keeps carpet looking new; cleaning it after it already looks bad is damage control.
What to do between professional cleanings
Vacuum slowly — one pass forward and back over the same strip, not a fast sweep. Blot spills immediately instead of rubbing them in. Put a mat at every entrance. And skip the supermarket spot cleaners with optical brighteners; they leave a sticky residue that attracts dirt right back to the spot you just treated.
